Apple Working on the Verizon iPhone. Can We Stop Rumor Mongering About this Now?

Well, there it is. We knew this was going to happen eventually, since the only thing better than having the most popular phone on a US network was having it on two US networks. Yes, a new iPhone is being developed by Apple to work with Verizon’s CDMA network, and should be available next year according to the Wall Street Journal.

It’s pretty easy to continue treating AT&T as the butt of jokes here, which is all well and good. Know this though: AT&T was unprepared for the crazy demand for the iPhone and its data-intensive apps, true. However, Verizon will be seeing similar demand when their version gets released, which may or may not choke their network up a bit too. I’m not saying it’ll happen, but there’ll be a ton of defectors from AT&T, plus new customers, plus current VZ customers who upgrade. That’s significant. Also, that same group of defectors should free up some of AT&T’s resources for the rest of us, making for an overall better experience.

Competition’s a great thing, so the iPhone going to Verizon will make for an overall better experience for everybody on both networks. Everybody wins! Well, except AT&T. They kind of lose.

Good news for AT&T users, your network should be freeing up soon.

It’s important to note Apple is making it possible for Verizon to adopt the iPhone, that doesn’t mean Verizon has decided to do it, but I can’t imagine them not jumping at the opportunity.

Good lord can this just happen already. I mean really.
